Coding Productivity · Part 1
Speed isn't the whole story.
What happens when we can create software faster than we can understand it?
AI tools have changed the pace of programming. A feature that once required hours of typing may now appear in seconds. That's exciting—but speed alone doesn't tell us whether we're making meaningful progress.
There's another dimension worth measuring: understanding. Do we know why the code works? Can we maintain it, explain it, and recognize when it's wrong?
Four places a developer can find themselves

The aim isn't to judge developers by a quadrant. It's to notice where our habits are taking us. Slow, careful work can be valuable. Fast AI-assisted work can be valuable too. The danger comes when we mistake output for mastery.
Writing more code isn't the same thing as making more progress.
At Pennington Labs, this is a question worth returning to as we build: how can we use powerful tools to move faster while still growing our ability to reason, test, and make good decisions?
This is the starting point. The next question is how we move toward Flow intentionally—without trading understanding for speed.
